Okaaaaay I got suckered into watching the Academy Awards all night long again. Don’t know why. I didn’t actually pay attention to all of it but I stayed up for all of it and have the baggy eyes to prove it.
Big bore overall.
Didn’t think Sandra Bollock should have been there in the running at all and REALLY don’t think she shoulda won.
Haven’t seen Avatar and don’t intend to no matter how many people tell me how amazing it is because I don’t like science fiction in the first place much and don’t need it rehashed with a Dances With Wolves storyline underneath it. And I don’t look good in big 3D glasses anyway. So I’m glad that Hurt Locker won so big because James Cameron seems like a dick anyway and having him get his billion-dollar-movie ass handed to him artistically by his ex wife is just spiffy with me.
The dude who won for screenplay adaptation of the book Push which was the movie Precious gets bonus award for most earnest and sincere acceptance speech though honestly I wasn’t sure whether to shed a tear at his demeanor or chuckle at it.

I watched it – and I won my Oscar pool for like 7 years straight now (just me n my wife in that pool mind you).
I was unsure about the Bullock thing as well, heck even Bridges may have got an award I am not sure about. I was happy for the Hurt Locker – makes me want to watch the film (which to be honest didn’t look that great in commercials). I did notice 2 of may faves had movies out I will need to watch: Wes Anderson had ‘the fantastic Mr Fox’ and the Coen boys had ‘a serious man’.
I mainly watch the Oscars to see what movies look interesting that I may not have heard of – and CrazyHeart and an Education (and the one about Tolstoy) are one’s I want to see.
I also havent seen Avatar.

I need to see Hurt Locker this week but I did see Avatar. Loved the visuals of the movie esp in 3D.
I was one of those people who, despite being a sci-fi fan…liking to catch at least a couple blockbuster flicks on the big screen every year…and generally finding James Cameron films enjoyable (though I still haven’t and never shall see “Titanic”)…really planned not to see “Avatar.”
In the end, I did because I was overdue for some daddy time alone with myself, I hadn’t seen a movie in the theater in a while, and if I never saw the damned thing, I would never comprehend what the hub-bub was about technically/visually, since I knew that on DVD, none of that would come through.
So, a couple weeks ago, I saw it. I didn’t expect much from the plot and so I wasn’t let down by it. Predictable, but action packed and enjoyable enough. Simplistic, but well acted overall. Son of Blue, who saw it on his own weeks before I did, had told me he thought it sucked from a dramatic and storyline standpoint and he pretty much despised the movie overall, but I wouldn’t be quite as hard on it as he was.
But the 3-D effects, and on an Imax screen…that was marvelous. This is probably the first time I’ve seen 3-D used like it should be: to put you almost INTO the movie. It’s not about things flying out the screen at you but about making the things on the screen seem tangible and feeling like you’re moving through that world on the screen along with the other characters.
So, in the end, I’m glad I got to see what 3-D CAN achieve with the right technology, enough money, and the right people.
Great movie? Nah. A good one, though.
Fantastic achievement in cinematic technology and execution? Oh, yes.
Never watched Titanic?! Absurd!!

I fought off seeing titanic myself for about a year…when I finally did see it on DVD I could have kicked myself for not seeing it on the big screen in the theater. Amazing movie, as is Avatar…Didn’t like the 3D version though.
I haven’t seen Titanic either…oddly enuff
