Today is Inauguration Day for PRESIDENT Barack Obama.
That is the future. He ain’t no messiah. He ain’t no miracle worker. But he sure the heck is the future.
They say we get the president we deserve and if that’s true I guess Geroge W. Bush was what we needed to knock us down a notch nationally and get us to take notice of our mistakes and our faults and our arrogance.
I like to think that Barack Obama is the president we deserve now that we’ve got our butts kicked and maybe came to our senses a bit.
I like to think that Barack Obama can begin to pull us out of our current mess even if he cant fix it all with his new administration and a Democratically controled Congress.
Today is the future. In a man who is a Christian and unlike the last president, actually acts like one most of the time.
As a foreigner who wants good things to happen in any and all parts of the world, I wish Americans will work more in harmony with their president.

I totally agree with your post. While I’m a young woman who feels that President Obama can certainly relate to some of the issues I face, the core of the change rests in our hands. I see in him a great leader who inspires us to UNITE so we can STAND. One thing I’ve noticed in this outgoing administration is that we tend to want to save the world when we have choas in the house. We have to begin to take care of home and put emphasis on home or the foundation on which this nation was built on will begin to crumble.
The change starts with us and I believe that one reason why God has pre-ordained for President Obama to win the election and to lead this nation is because it’s tearing down walls that have been difficult to break down for years and centuries.
I praise God for the transition and the growth that is taking place. See, this is the very thing that can make a major impact on the world, violent force by invasion isn’t always in the answer… enough said about that.
I believe God wants us to see the value that we all have in one another and to learn to appreciate each other’s differences. When we get to that point, we can grow together as a nation. All of the hatred will not stop. but I am assured in my walk with God that the power of God is a force to be reckoned with. And anytime you have a person who rolls up their sleeves and wants to get in the trenches and unite people and then some evil hateful people try to destroy that, they get exposed and God will bring on the justice. But, we all will be able to make a positive change in this great nation. In all of my 35 years, I’ve never thought of this nation as great, even though I served in the military. Today, I see Red, White, and Blue in a different light than before.

Today is OUR inauguration. If we get the president we deserve, in like manner, a president gets the electorate he deserves.
It’s time that WE, the American people, realize that we’re the government, and that it’s up to us to preside over the country in a manner that befits the best in us. We can’t leave that duty to a congress of representatives, nor to a president.
If we don’t like the government we have, we have no one to blame but ourselves–we are the government. If our government is behaving in a way that trashes our highest ideals, then it behooves us to take appropriate steps to remedy the misbehavior.
If we leave our governance to others, then this government of the people, by the people, for the people cannot stand.
For too long we have allowed special interest, and political action committees, to steer the nation, to set its goals, and benefit the few at the expense of the many.
As president, the best thing that Barack Obama can do for us as a nation is to give the country back to the people. To the extent that he, and the congress achieve this, to that extent will the governance be back in the hands of those who will serve it best–the people.
I believe that Obama’s right on course, and it will be his aim not to push his own agenda, but the people’s agenda. Too often past presidents have pushed their own agenda, and we have suffered for it.
Too often they have forgotten, once in office, who the boss is, to whom the government belongs–that they’re working for the people and not the other way around.
Our duty is to preside over our government by exercising our right to bring our representatives about when they stray too far from the people’s business and begin to conduct their own.
Lest we forget, it was the people, in the last eight years, who waged two wars, and allowed the country to sink into a recession that borders on a depression because we failed to stand unitedly and preside over the affairs of our country.
We can blame Bush all we want, but it was us that was too lazy to take an active interest in our government and to insist that it operates in the people’s interest.
And I dare say that we will continue to leave the governance to others. Our duty as presiders don’t end when we elect a person or a body of persons to represent us–it continues, or should continue, indefinitely, but rarely does.
I pray that a new era of governance has begun. But, then, only time will tell.
Goodness gracious me…I don’t think I’ve ever generated comments so quickly and with such length and passion. Of course I think I have to give more credit to the power of the moment and history than to any greatness in my post.

This is indeed OUR time too…our time to step up as citizens (Christians and non-Christians alike) and be in control. I’m an optimistic sort so I think we can. I think we can take back the power that has been hoarded by big biz and that we’ve let them keep. In France, the peasants and poor revolted and started from scratch and there’s no reason we can’t today too since lord knows we’re an awful lot more connected, organized, aware, and educated than then. We can hold our government accountable.
President Obama is a symbol right now but I hope to see him be something more pratical too…sometone who gets things done and works with the citizens of this country as our partner. Someone we have appointed to spearhead things but not someone to rule us.
Cuz I’m about sick and tired of being ruled.
I’d like to hope that what The First Domino talks about will happen.
But I’m a cynical type. I’m optimistic in many parts of my personal and family life, but not so much when it comes to humanity. There, I’m a real “glass is half empty” kind of guy.
I have a lot of hope that politically and economically and militarily that Barack Obama can do some good repair work if we give him the chance. But as far as the overall view of how we let government and business conducts themselves…
Well, not so hopeful there. Money and influence is still concentrated among a few. No matter what the backdrop, it is difficult to get the American populace to rise up and demand something better when people are still scared for their jobs, unable to afford health insurance, losing their homes, etc.
It is possible, and I HOPE this signals a total sea change in the way we operate in this country. But I’m not getting my hopes up until I see it. Because frankly, I don’t even know most days what I can do individually to really make a difference as I try to get through life…much less how to connect with others in a meaningful way.
I do my small steps here and there. I do the little things to try to make the environment better and the lives of people around me better. But while it matters, and it’s important, I don’t know that I think such actions, even on a mass basis, will overturn the existing power structure.
Have the rich ever really been thrown down from their pedestals throughout history? I think there are things we can do to curb them, but money has always been the oil that greases the gears of the world, and I have a fundamental distrust of people. Even in myself, I see how easy it is to get selfish. The more one has, the more selfish one tends to be.
But then again, I’m one of those people who takes the Bible at its word that the world is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.
I think there is a lot of promise in Obama’s adminstration to make our day to day a bit better and make our future brighter. I just don’t think it will change human nature.
Sorry to be a downer on this topic, because I really am excited about Obama becoming president. But I hate to see people get too much expectation. We’re only human…and that includes Obama.
